What is Communication Made of?

Last night my two young children were arguing. More specifically, they were talking at each other.

Their voices quickly increasing in volume each time they spoke with the intention that greater volume would surely get the other person to do what they were demanding.

Hand gestures and emotive eyes were abundant. Without focusing on where they must have learned this behaviour (thank you my tiny human mirrors), I decided I had the energy to test a new approach.

I asked them curiously what they thought three parts of communication were. To the blank (yet quiet) stares, I responded “I think it’s made of… listening, so we can hear and understand others in the conversation. Taking turns speaking, so we can all share and connect. And action, so we can take ownership of our part of the conversation.”

My approach was successful in the way that I bored them in unison, so they left their argument behind and went on to more fun things. However, it got me thinking about how frequently I’ve seen my fair share of communication fails and some rather good communication wins. I’m sure you have too.

  • What do you think the three parts of quality communication are?
  • How might you incorporate these parts into your meetings?
  • Give it a go: in your next conversation, count to 5 after someone finishes speaking. This gives them space and time to complete their thought and you to digest what they’ve said before you share your thoughts.
